Completion of Chloride Group PLC’s acquisition of DB Power Electronics Pvt Ltd, Pune, India.

Chloride Group PLC (“Chloride”) (www.chloridepower.com) and India’s leading UPS company, DB Power Electronics Pvt Ltd (“DB”) (www.dbups.com), are pleased to announce that Chloride has acquired a 90% majority shareholding in DB effective from 20 July 2009.

This follows the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2005 when DB became Chloride’s exclusive partner in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. This strategic partnership has been very successful helping DB to generate significant sales growth (from both its own products and those of Chloride) over the last 4 years exceeding INR 250 Crore and employing more than 700 people throughout India.

DB’s newly built manufacturing facilities in Pune and Satara are world class and have been supplying product into Chloride’s international sales network for some time in addition to the Indian market, where DB is a market leader in high power UPS.  Chloride and DB recently opened a new purpose built R&D facility in Pune, India to develop cutting edge technologies and products for the Indian market place, and which will now play a leading role in the development of Chloride Group’s products and services for international markets.

DB will continue to develop, manufacture and promote its own field proven and highly reliable UPS products in India, alongside the complementary Chloride products and services – both standard and industrial.

The DB Power name is valued and respected throughout the region and will continue to be used.

The combination of the Chloride and DB product and services offering is unique in the Indian power protection market and together the business will develop further for the benefit of all customers.

Freedom from Harmonic Pollution by first of its kind Active filter from DB Power

The Industrial and Commercial applications use of devices like Computers, UPSs, AC / DC drives, Energy saving lamps, Rectifiers, High density DC power supplies, Solid State Lighting ballasts, SMPS etc. is on rise. These devices draw non-linear type of current from the electrical supply. This leads to what is called as Harmonic Pollution, which has bad effects on the quality of power and it creates problems for user as well as the supply authority.

Thus Harmonic Pollution of the utility supply is a growing concern across the high power consumers like Datacenters, Process and Automation Industry, Hospitals, Commercial buildings, Retail malls etc. The high harmonic distortion affects the power usage, reduces productivity, components life & can even damage the equipments. They also affect performance of DG sets & Transformers, cables and switchgears used and causes great drain on the power supply. They have detrimental effect on telephones and sensitive electrical equipments. A spurious tripping of the switchgear due to Harmonics can stop the entire production line, can give spurious results for the medical diagnosis equipments.
These harmonic effects are often seen in terms of heating of cables and transformers, Rising the Neutral current beyond the cable capacity, bursting of power factor capacitors, (all these can lead to fire hazard) Nuisance tripping of circuit breakers, Voltage distortion, Losses in Induction motors, Zero-crossing noise etc.

In present days the supply authorities are facing the challenges of maintaining voltage and VAr support as number of non-linear loads are increasing and T&D capacity is becoming more constrained. These has led to load shedding of 12 – 14 hrs in many residential as well commercial areas.

DB Power Electronics (P) Ltd., three decades old Premier Power Electronics company in India, has come to the rescue of all the harmonics affected users. Their State-of-Art designed Digital Active Power Conditioner, named as SWAN, is a unique answer to all the harmonic problems. Swan dynamically eliminates the Harmonics from the utility power source and improves on the Power Factor nearer to unity.

This Active Filter is based on Synchronous Rotating Reference Frame principle and uses
32 bit DSP controller, giving stable, easy to upgrade, flexible performance over longer period of operational life. It has wide applications areas and can be installed along with UPS, AC Drives, At the Source, At the large computer facilities, Near main input.
Excellent application could be found with the complex mix of load as seen in the Datacenters, Hospitals and Process Automation.

Swan works in shunt with the load. It is easier to add it in the existing setup, even without taking load shutdown. It can be used at the source end with higher currents and lower harmonics.

Users of SWAN get following distinctive advantages ;

• Reduction in kVA demand – The reduction in demand is proportional to the additional kVA demand being induced due to power pollutant Harmonics.
• Better utilization of main distribution Transformer & Generators – Elimination in the Harmonics reduces excess stress on the power utility source, and releases extra power to be utilized by the additional loads.
• Reduction in cable heating – Providing security against the fire hazards which may be caused due to presence of high percentage of Harmonics.
• Reduces stress on thermal management – The direct reduction in power loss drastically cuts down the heat generation, reducing the load on air conditioning system.
• Complies with harmonic distortion as per IEEE 519
• Excellent Energy management

With Swan, the reliability and profitability of the installation increases drastically. For an electric power consumer, optimization of an existing power system increases productivity and decreases utility charges, and improves equipment life.

Features :

• Designed with Synchronous Rotating Reference Frame principle
• 32 bit, DSP control system
• Employs high speed IGBTs in power circuit
• Closed loop active filter with source current sensing
• High attenuation up to 96 % of individual harmonics
• Programmable selective harmonic elimination
• PF compensation, leading as well as lagging
• Required PF can be set from 0.7 to unity
• Selection between PF and harmonic compensation
• Remote monitoring and diagnosis
• Self current limiting, under overloading condition
• Automatic current limit modification with respect to ambient temperature
• Helps compliance to IEEE 519
• IEC / EN 62040 - 2 : 2006 category C3
• Alarm log with date and time stamp for fault diagnosis
• User friendly PC interface
• CE marking

Knowing the damaging effects of Harmonic pollution on power utility sources, globally, Electricity Regulators demand very strict control on the level of Harmonics. European and US countries have proposed standards to responsibly engineer systems considering the electrical environment. IEEE 519-1992 and IEC 555 have evolved.
In India, the Supply authorities (SEBs) are imposing strict penalties for not maintaining PF and injection of harmonics in to supply lines.

Working principle:

Swan uses latest technology to eliminate harmonics injected into the mains supply by non-linear loads, as well supplies inductive power demanded by the load so as to correct input power factor to near unity.

Current harmonic elimination is achieved by sensing load current and extracting harmonic current signal. This and the reactive current signal together are used to generate a reference for the controlled current source connected at the PCC (Point of Common Connection) of source and load. This result in the mains supplying only real power for the load and reactive and harmonics being sourced from the Swan. This is carried out dynamically, so that a change in the load pattern or its nature is immediately responded to, without any manual intervention.
The DAPC compensates the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads by generating the similar harmonic components in opposite.
